Popular Tiki Beverages

The first tiki bar appeared in the United States in the 1930s, and they are now found throughout the world. The only thing better than the Polynesian-inspired decorations and exotic music is the brightly colored, fruity drinks. There are several drinks that are now staples in any tiki bar throughout the world, so read on to learn how you can add a little island flair to your next party.
The Mai Tai
The Mai Tai is perhaps the most recognized tiki drink in the world. It was supposedly invented in 1944 at Trader Vic's, a popular tiki-themed restaurant. It is a simple drink and only requires a few ingredients to make. First, pour two ounces of dark, Jamaican rum over shaved ice. Follow with the juice from one lime, a half ounce of Orange Curacao, a quarter ounce of rock candy syrup and a half ounce of French Garnier. Add a spring of mint, shake vigorously and enjoy.
The Zombie
Another popular tiki drink is the Zombie cocktail. This drink also has a long tiki bar history that dates back to the 1930s. This drink supposedly earned its name due to its strong effects on the person drinking it. A common Zombie contains one part each of white rum, golden rum, dark rum, apricot brandy, pineapple juice and papaya juice. Top that off with half an ounce of Bacardi 151 and a dash of grenadine. Stir and then pour over the rocks into a tall, Zombie-style glass.
The Fishbowl
Fishbowl drinks originated in tiki bars and come in hundreds of different flavors. They were meant for sharing between multiple people, but you may choose to keep them to yourself. One good Fishbowl starts with a generous helping of ice. Follow that with three ounces each of coconut-flavored rum, Blue Curacao and vodka. Add a large splash of pineapple juice, a half cup of sweet and sour mix and a splash of lemon-lime soda. The key is to serve this drink in an oversize Fishbowl-style glass that is complete with long straws and umbrella garnishes.
Above are just a few drinks that are considered staples of any good tiki experience. Most are easy to make, contain island rums and feature vibrant, fruity flavors. Making tiki drinks is a great way to liven up any party and impress friends and family.
